Health Canada recently published the new Corded Window Coverings Regulations to restrict the length of cords and the size of loops allowed on window coverings sold in Canada,
The Corded Window Coverings Regulations made under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA), restrict the length of reachable cords and the size of loops that can be created by a cord in order to help eliminate the risk of strangulation. The Regulations repeal and replace the Corded Window Covering Products Regulations (CWCPR)
The new regulations will come into force on May 1, 2021 to give manufacturers, importers, and retailers time to adjust to the new requirements.
The new regulations are to protect children from strangulation hazard associated with window coverings. The requirements for window coverings will apply to all products imported and sold in Canada, both custom-made and off the shelf. It would be illegal to manufacture, import, advertise, or sell non-compliant CWCs once the Regulations are implemented.
