The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency has announced the transfer of 731 of its agents from ports along the northern border to the southern border. These officers are being temporarily moved in order to support the influx of migrants entering the U.S. from Mexico.
The deployment of northern border Customs officers to the southern border has already begun. And, while temporary, the transfer is expected to remain in place through the summer months.
As we head into peak travel season, the reduction of officers on the northern border is expected to cause delays for both travelers and commercial shipments. As a result, commercial transports may experience longer-than-usual wait times for shipments entering the United States from Canada.
U.S. businesses expecting commercial transports to deliver goods are encouraged to check on wait times at northern border crossings via the Border Wait Times (BWT) website or BWT app to determine the degree to which their transport may be delayed.
