The Army and Navy already have control of 65 port and customs facilities in the country with 2,203 elements to comply with the presidential instruction to combat corruption and the trafficking of illicit goods.
In two documents obtained by El Economista through transparency, the National Defense (Sedena) and Navy (Semar) secretariats showed the deployment in each of the country’s customs and ports.
The Secretary of the Navy reported that by Secretarial agreement 333 of September 17, 2018, some 1,034 naval elements participate in the Port Protection Units (Unaprop) through surveillance, verification, visit, inspection and control actions in the functions of the Coast Guard within 19 port areas such as Matamoros, Altamira, Tampico, Tuxpan, Ensenada, among others.
For its part, Sedena reported that 1,169 elements are in support of the Tax Administration Service (SAT) in 46 customs facilities: border crossing “El Chaparral”; “Otay” gatehouse; checkpoint “Algodones”; Mexicali I and II customs; Tecate customs and San Luis Río Colorado customs, among others.
